Dahlia Bedspread

MATERIALS: Solarized Crochet Cotton, 38 cones (800 yds) Ecru or White. Crochet hook size 8. Ch 10, join. RND 1: 18 tr in circle. RND 2: 24 sc, using back of st only. RND 3: 28 sc, using back of st only. RND 4: 36 sc, using back of st only. RND 5: 48 sc, using back of st only. RND 6: 54 sc, using back of st only. RND 7: * ch 4, skip 2 sts, 1 dc in next st, and repeat from * around. RND 8: Sc in each ch st and 3 sc over each dc. RND 9 to 18 incl: Like rnd 8 always having 3 sc in the middle one of the 3 sc of preceding rnd. When 18th rnd is finished, the dahlia will have 18 leaves and each leaf will have 28 sc. Fold leaf so that the first 6 sts will lie over the last 6 sts of the previous leaf. RND 19: * Work 6 sc of the 12 sc as they lie together. Ch 1 to hold it solid), and repeat from * 3 times forming 4 popcorns in section, widen as usual and repeat on the 6 sides. RNDS 26 and 27: Solid dc (be sure to widen at corners). RND 28: * Dc, ch 1, and repeat from * all around widening as usual. Must be 20 holes. The hexagon blocks may be sewed or crocheted together. Use Solarized Crochet Cotton. Starting at top with Spanish Red and No. 7 hook, ch 42 to reach loosely around doll's waist. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * ch 5, skip 3 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across. Turn. 2nd row: In each loop across make sc, 9 dc and sc. MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, Art. A.104, Size 30: 3 balls of White; or Clark's O.N.T. Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Art. B4, Size 30: 8 balls of White; or Clark's Big Ball Mercerized Crochet, Art, B.34, Size 30: 3 balls of White. Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 10. A fine Milwards Sewing Needle. 5 vials of pink and 2 vials each of yellow and green beads. Using sewing needle, thread 1 vial of pink beads and 78 yellow beads on working thread. FIRST MOTIF ... Starting at center, ch 10. join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 23 dc in ring. join to top of ch-3. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, insert hook in same place as sl st, slip a bead in place, draw loop through and complete an sc (beaded sc made), (all beads are worked in on wrong side of work), make a beaded sc in each dc around. join. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, make a beaded sc in same place as sl st and in next 3 sc, make a plain sc in same place as last sc (1 sc increased), beaded sc in next 4 sc. Smart and a favorite, the demure mesh snood. MATERIALS: J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 1 ball of any color. Steel crochet hook No. 4. 1 yd grosgrain ribbon, 1 3\4 inches wide. 11 inches of round elastic. Make all chains loosely. To make foundation chain: * Ch 4, sc in back loop of last ch (forming a knot). Repeat from * until piece measures 12 inches. 1ST ROW: Sc in center ch between 4th and 5th knots from hook, * (ch 3, sc in back loop of last ch) twice, ch 3, sc in center ch between next 2 knots. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last ch. (Ch 3, sc in back loop of last ch) twice, ch 3, turn. 2ND ROW: Sc in 1st loop, * (ch 3, sc in back loop of last ch) twice, ch 3, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. (Ch 3, sc in back loop of last ch) twice, ch 3, turn. Repeat last row 20 more times. Fasten off. Attach thread to 1 end of foundation chain, into each loop of foundation chain, into each loop of foundation chain make 6 sc. Attach round elastic to snood at this point. Wrap base of a candle in waxed paper, insert in Candlestick cup, turn upside down in a jar or bottle, block base flat and leave until dry. Starching instructions: For doilies dissolve 2 heaping tablespoons (3 for other pieces), of Argo Gloss Starch in 1\2 cup cold water, add to 1 quart warm water, heat and boil briskly for several minutes, stirring constantly. Add 1 cup cold water and cool until comfortable to handle. Add enough liquid Bluing to make starch a deep blue. Dip crochet in starch, squeezing the starch thru it thoroughly. Remove, squeeze out excess starch, roll in paper towels and leave for an hour or two. Then rub off any excess starch with paper towel, stretch on waxed paper and block ass given in individual instructions.

Green. 1-skein each Dp. Peach, Black, Med. Green, Dusty Rose and Dk. Salmon Rose (or other colors), 1\2-yd. Oyster White linen, 1\2-yd. Lt. Green muslin A picture frame 13"xl6" glass size. Crochet hook size 5. MAT—Cut cardboard for a loose fit in frame. Cut out center 3" from bottom, 2" from other 3 sides. Cut linen 1" outside edges, pull taut and fasten on back with gummed tape, slashing inside corners. In Lt. Cut a long strip of thin cardboard and roll to fit inside the basket to brace sides. Fasten another strip snugly around outside. Pull sides up to an even height . When perfectly dry, sew lid to sides between 8 scallops across back edge. Give 3 coats of White Shellac.

With wrong side facing, sew pieces together, leaving opening large enough to insert pincushion. Insert pincushion and sew up opening. With Black embroider lines around pincushion. BUTTON . . . With Black, ch 2, work as for pincushion until piece measures same as button mold, then * work off 2 sc as 1 sc (1 sc decreased), sc in next sc. Repeat from * around until 6 sc have been decreased. For the Strings Join the thread to the corner of bag, ch 65, draw the ch through lst mesh between flap and bag and join with d to a large bone ring, ch 65 and draw thread through same mesh, join with d to the same place where lst ch of 65 started, 3 d into next sp, 1 d into next sp, ch 64, skip one mesh and pass the chain through the next, 1 d to ring, ch 64, pass the ch through the same mesh and continue across bag, making each ch about 1 less as you go towards the center of bag and increase 1 st as you go towards the other end, being careful to have the chains the correct length, and finish with 65 ch.

Heart Sachet

MATERIALS: CLARK'S O.N.T. "BRILLIANT," 1 ball. Steel Crochet Hook No. 8. 1 yard of ribbon, 5/8 inch wide. Starting at upper part of heart, ch 10. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 ch; in next ch make sc, ch 3 and sc; sc in next 4 ch. Ch 5, turn. 2nd to 5th rows incl: 2 sc in 1st sc (an inc made), sc in each sc across to the ch-3. In ch-3 loop make sc, ch 3 and sc (2 more increases); sc in each sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc (another inc). Ch 5, turn.

6th, 7th and 8th rows: Work off 2 sc as 1 sc (a dec made); work across, increasing in ch-3 loop as before and decreasing an sc at end of row. Ch 5, turn. 9th and 10th rows: Work as before, decreasing 2 sc (instead of 1 sc) at both ends of row--to dec 2 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc twice. Ch 5, turn. 11th row: Dec 2 sc as before, * ch 3, sc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * across, making sc, ch 3 and sc in center ch-3 loop and decreasing 2 sc at end of row as before. Fasten off. Lay this piece aside. Make another piece same as this. Place these 2 pieces so that loops along edges correspond, and work edging over both thicknesses as follows: 1st row: Attach thread to beginning of 1st row, * ch 5, dc in next double loop. Repeat from * across, ending with sl st at opposite end of 1st row. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 5 sc in each sp across, ending with sl st in same place where thread was attached. Ch 7, turn. 3rd row: *Skip 1 sc, sc in next sc, ch 7. Repeat from * across, ending row to correspond with beginning. Ch 7, turn. 4th row: * Sc in next loop, ch 7. Repeat from * across. Ch 7, turn. 5th row: * Sc in next loop, ch 1, in next loop make 6 tr with p between--to make a p, ch 3, sc in 3rd ch from hook--ch 1. Repeat from * across, ending row to correspond with beginning. Fasten off. Sew edges of hearts together stuffing with cotton batting with sachet powder between, before opening becomes too small. Starting at top of heart with 1/2 yard of ribbon, pass ribbon through dc sps and tie a knot. Tie ends in a bow, 2 1/2 inches up from knot just made. Trim ends.
