A range of Assessment Tasks: address the required Performance Criteria within each Element. 3. A Record of Assessment: summarises the sources of evidence used in assessing the required competencies for the course, and whether or not each competency has been met.

1. ASSESSMENT OVERVIEW The Assessment Overview provides a summary of the possible sources of evidence that may be used in assessing the various Performance Criteria within each Element of the ten Units comprising the NEIS Certificate IV in Small Business Management BSB40407, together with an indication of the way in which the Employability Skills are assessed. For example, evidence to assess competency on Performance Criterion 1.1 of Element 1 of Unit BSBSMB301A: Investigate micro business opportunities, can be gathered using the Business Plan Assessment Task, as indicated below.

Assessment of Employability Skills takes place as indicated in the example for Unit BSBSMB401A: Establish legal and risk management requirements of small business. For example, Employability Skill ‘communication’ is assessed within the assessment of Performance Criteria 2.3 and 2.5, as indicated below.

In other words, in the process of completing the designated Assessment Task, the candidate will demonstrate their ability to communicate.

2. ASSESSMENT TASKS The Assessment Tasks for this Certificate IV Course are divided into two sections, namely: Section A: Business Plan

The purpose of this main Assessment Task is to assess process and performance from an integrated and summative perspective, through the candidate’s application of knowledge and understandings to a specific small business context.

Section B: Workplace or Simulated Assessment

The purpose of these Assessment Tasks is to assess process and performance through the candidate’s activities in the workplace or a simulated workplace situation.

Workplace or Simulated Assessments are reserved for those Performance Criteria for which evidence of competency cannot be gathered from any source other than in the workplace or a simulated situation. For example, Performance Criteria that require various aspects of the business to ‘comply’ or be ‘monitored’.

An important note regarding Simulated Assessment According to the Assessment Guidelines for the Business Services Training Package, in order to be valid and reliable, the simulation must closely respresent what actually occurs in the workplace and should seek to replicate the actual work setting.

3. ASSESSMENT KEY The Assessment Key provides guidelines for the assessment of competency for the Business Plan and Workplace or Simulated Assessment.

4. RECORD OF ASSESSMENT The Record of Assessment is a summary of the range of sources of evidence used to assess the competency of the candidate, and provides checkboxes for the assessor to indicate whether each competency has been met. For example, evidence to assess competency on Performance Criterion 1.1 of Element 1 of Unit BSBSMB301A, can be gathered using using the Executive Summary and Section 2 of the Business Plan. Achievement of competency is indicated here.
