History The Toyota story begins in the late nineteenth century, when Sakichi Toyoda invented Japan’s first power loom, which was to revolutionize the country’s textile industry. In January 1918, Sakichi founded the Toyota Spinning & Weaving Company, and with the help of his son, Kiichiro Toyoda, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of building an automatic loom in 1924.Two years later, he established the Toyota Automatic Loom Works. Like his father, Kiichiro was an inventor, and during his visits to Europe and the US in the 1920s, he became particularly interested in the nascent automotive industry. Making the most of

the £100,000 that Sakichi Toyoda received for selling the patent rights for his automatic loom, Kiichiro laid the foundations of the Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), which was established in 1937. Rising from the ashes of industrial upheaval in post-war Japan,Toyota become the largest vehicle manufacturer in its native country, gaining more than 40% of the national market. By 1980, Toyota had rolled out its 30 millionth car, and by the turn of the century the figure had risen to 100 million. A new holding company,Toyota Motor Europe (TME), was created in July 2002, to ensure better coordination between marketing, research and development, manufacturing and external affairs activities in Europe.

Recent Developments In 2006,Toyota models ranked top in terms of customer satisfaction in four of the seven individual vehicle segments in Germany, according to the J.D. Power and Associates Germany Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Study. The study, now in its fifth year in Germany, measures overall owner satisfaction with two-year-old vehicles. Four key factors are measured to determine owner satisfaction. They are: quality and reliability (30%), vehicle appeal (25%), service satisfaction (23%), and ownership cost (22%).Toyota has been the clear leader in this study since its inception. The Toyota models which came out on top were Toyota Yaris (small car),Toyota Corolla (lower medium),Toyota Corolla Verso (MPV), and Toyota RAV4 (SUV). For the fifth consecutive year,Toyota led the industry as the most satisfying brand to own, receiving a score of 851 points on a 1,000-point scale.Toyota received the highest ratings from customers in terms of quality & reliability and service satisfaction. The J.D. Power and Associates runs similar studies all over the world and Toyota has been a consistent winner year in, year out. In addition to a reputation for customer satisfaction, reliability, technological innovation and manufacturing expertise,Toyota fully assumes its corporate responsibility for the

environment and the community in which it operates. In an effort to meet the challenge of going green,Toyota is working toward reducing emissions in all its areas of activity. The “Aim: Zero Emission” concept connects with Toyota’s broad vision of sustainable mobility, in which environment impact is measured over a vehicle’s entire life cycle, and emphasis is placed on reducing this impact. As a result,Toyota has developed its Ecological Vehicle Assessment System, or Eco-VAS.Toyota began using Eco-VAS in 2005, and is currently in the process of bringing the system to a high level of implementation. Moreover,Toyota is exploring a wide range of solutions for developing cleaner, greener vehicles. In order to achieve this goal, the ultimate Eco-Car,Toyota is investing in different technologies: hybrid technology, fuel cells and compressed natural gas engines. Another leading-edge technology for petrol engines is the Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) system.Toyota developed this integrated intelligent technology that uses advanced solutions inside engines to improve fuel management and driving operations. The system uses less fuel in comparison to other petrol engines and emits less carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. Another development is Toyota’s Common Rail Diesel technology (known as D-4D), which injects a precise amount of fuel directly into the combustion chamber to deliver more efficient combustion and better fuel economy. This helps reduce CO2 levels and exhaust emissions.
