Travis Ranch Newsletter January/February 2014
Administrators’ Message Dear Travis Ranch Families, Last month, I discussed some general Common Core shifts in both Language Arts and Math. This month, we move on to the next set of Common Core shifts. By using effective instructional strategies, we ensure that students will be college and career ready. Shifts in ELA/Literacy: Read more complex material carefully. Students will: • Re-read • Read material at comfort level AND work with more challenging material • Handle frustration and keep pushing (perseverance) Parents can: • Provide more challenging texts and read along with them • Provide texts they WANT to read and can read comfortably • Know what is grade level appropriate Shifts in Mathematics: Speed and Accuracy Students will: • Spend time practicing lots of multi-step problems on the same idea (As students advance through the grades, fluency assessments will require speed and accuracy for multiple step operations) Parents can: • Push children to know/memorize basic math facts • Know all of the fluencies your child should have and prioritize learning of the ones they don’t Imbedded in the Common Core Standards are four essential skills and qualities that we will develop and build upon year after year. These skills and qualities are: 1) Critical thinking and problem solving, 2) Communication, 3) Collaboration, and 4) Creativity and innovation. Sincerely, Cindy Freeman Principal

HOLIDAY GIFT SHOP We held our first every Holiday Gift Shop this year! The kids had an exciting time getting to experience the thrill of secretly buying gifts for the special people in their lives. We provided it as a service to the kids, no profit taken. It was a huge success – we did $12,000 in sales. In exchange for running the Holiday Gift Shop for a week, we earned 25% savings towards inflatables and booths at our Carnival in June. Many thanks to all of the volunteers who helped make this a success! Any problems with your product, please call Fun Services directly at 1-800-3006380.

Volunteer Corner Worker Bee Volunteer Program I would like to personally thank every volunteer that assisted our caring Health Clerks for the Elementary (January) & Middle School (past November) Vision & Hearing Screening. Susan Shedd, our school nurse, really appreciated everyone's assistance to run the screenings so efficiently for our students and staff! You all really made a big difference! Joining the TR Worker Bees is easy, simply go to the Travis Ranch PTA web site and go to the Contact tab on the screen. Enter your information and I can add your name or call 714-986-7460, option 7 and leave a message. Here are some possible Worker Bee tasks: work a shift at the Book Fair, help distribute fundraiser prizes, count Box Tops or help sell tickets for an event to name a few. It's a great way to get involved when it fits into your busy schedule. Terise Schweers TR Worker Bee Coordinator
Every Minute Counts . . . You really do make a difference….. WOW! We have had some very busy volunteers since the beginning of the school year. I've recorded over 3,690 volunteer hours! Thank you so much for all of your hard work and dedication. Now is the time for all of you who have helped on campus or at home, to please record all of those invaluable hours! Volunteer hours are used as a tool to lobby our legislators to support programs beneficial to your children’s future. Hours spent are the same as money spent to support our school. Please remember to sign the Volunteer Log located at the front counter in the office. Remember, every minute counts! Thank you again for all you do. Thank you, Jamie Schroth Historian
