Triadic relational drawing video analysis (RDVA) in couple therapy Dr. Luis Tapia Villanueva Dra. Maria Elisa Molina Unidad de Terapia de Pareja. Universidad del Desarrollo. Chile 42nd SPR Annual Meeting, June 29, July 2, Bern Switzerland, 2011
Couple therapy distinctions
• The central focus in couple therapy are the process distinctions (Pattern, meaning attributions, emotions, climate and belief) because they become the therapeutic interventions targets.
• The
therapeutic interventions in the process permit improving the emotional regulations of dysfunctional patterns regard to closeness/distance.
Double description distinction (Bateson, 1979; Hui, Cashman, & Deacon, 2010)
• Bateson uses a human binocular vision as a metaphor to
describe double description. If you see some object with only one eye, you see in two dimensions. If you use both eyes, you see in three dimensions, because brain cortex integrates the two retinas overlapping and produce extra information in another logical level, “the depth perception”.
• Bateson uses a double description as a useful tool to find
hidden path or undetected dimensions in relationship. The similar (non identical) overlapping paths produce a “bonus” pattern information.
• The particular inference way that permit the information extraction is abduction.
Abductive inference (Bateson, 1979 ; Hui, Cashman, & Deacon, 2010)
• Abduction is a third type of logical inference such as deduction
and induction, introduces by the American philosopher Charles Pierce
• Double description is the base for abduction. • The particular inference way that permit the information extraction is abduction
• The difference between two information sources permits
treating these sources as two different cases from the same phenomenon. This operation permits the inference of a general rule from other logical level.

Abductive learning: The difference means information: Mind representation, feelings and their verbalization drawing Drawing reveals dysfunctional patterns and relational resources. It permits talking about the conflict distancing from anger and pain and allows the session focusing more in the process than arguments. Drawing reveals the meta-logical solutions hidden in the oppositional dichotomies that are displayed at a lower logical level.
Dyadic relational drawing (Tapia, Molina, 2010) • •
The instruction is “ Draw your actual relationship together at the same time in only one sheet of paper”. Between 1º and 2nd session There are three level of analysis:
• • •
Draws (Graphic analysis). Drawing process video (Interaction, dialogic and microprocess). Post joint drawing/video discussion (Narrative analysis).

Relational Drawing Video Analysis (RDVA)
Relational Drawing Video Analysis: (RDVA) (Tapia, Molina, 2010)
•
The RDVA permit:
• • • • •
To couple “see” a binocular point of view that provides new possible and more complex ways to overcome the dichotomy where the couple is gridlocked. The pattern emergence. Induces the mentalization process in each member of the couple. Allows talking about angry and pain more easily although the conflict externalization avoids the arguments and counter-arguments sequences. Improves the capacity of therapeutic system to establish a focus in proximity/distance patterns.
Triadic relational drawing • •
The instruction is “ Drawing together our actual therapeutic relationship at the same time in this sheet of paper”. Between 2º and 5º session or in any therapy moment There are two level of analysis:
• •
Drawing process video (Interaction, dialogic and microprocess) Post joint drawing/video discussion (Narrative analysis).

Clinical case 1 : Juan and Cristina Juan 41 years old, Anthropologist PhD Cristina 40 years old, Designer Marriage since 15 years, 2 children 12 and 10 years old Motive of consult: Since three years ago the relationship is deteriorated, he has been intolerant and distance and she has been more dependent and passive. C: “He is demanding, intense and perfectionist. He is in the future and I am in the present and it is difficult to keep pace”. J: “I run out of patience, I urge and also criticize her. If I don't start the engine, there isn't any sex”.

Post joint drawing/video couple discussion C: In spite of , I speak not so much during the sessions, here I am speaking more (to the husband and therapist) and I didn’t let you (to the husband) to intervene so much in my draw. J: It took my attention that Cristina drew in the hole space while I was focused on the details and looking for a space to draw. I saw you both drawing and my hand not being able to enter. Only after a moment we drew together. T: You Cristina interacted so quickly, completed and painted the figures, you enter the spaces of the others and we interacted from the beginning. You Juan drew in the corner for several minutes. I invited you many times without outcomes. Then you (speaking to the couple) drew something in a collaborative way and at the end we drew together a totality.

Clinical case 2 : Francisco and Bernardita Francisco 35 years old, Engineering Bernardita 32 years old, Chef Marriage since 6 years, 2 children, 3 and 1 years old Consultant motive : Since the beginning of the marriage she has vaginismus and sexual desire inhibition. F: “She came from the sin and “sex is dirty” culture C: “ I have fear, and if he insist I put more distance”.

Post joint drawing/video couple discussion
B: I noticed that I started slowly and insecurely. Then I relaxed and cooperative with T but not with , I don't know why. Then in the rest of my drawing I return to my refuge. F: I started drawing with a clear idea and my picture didn't change so much . The low involvement of B in the picture surprised me. It surprised me that T drew flexible lines in B side and “square” lines in my side… square as my person. T: It was so difficult for B to begin drawing and you waited a long time before drawing. We worked together in a collaborative picture during a few moments. I invited you F three times but we had not so much connection.

Relational drawing video analysis RDVA in triadic systems permit:
• • • • • • •
The pattern emergence. Shows a binocular view of the relational process. Induces the mentalization process in each member of the system. To observe the complexity of triadic relationship such as inclusion/exclusion, alliances, coalitions, mediations and distancing. To the therapist observe the quality of a web alliances To the therapist detect the possible alliances ruptures and the way to repair it To talk about ruptures more easily although the conflict externalization avoids the “hidden” conflicts
Research developments
• • • • • •
Clinical, RDVA and judges validation To establish in triadic systems a model of relational pattern analysis through video sequences. To determine and identify web alliances (husband/wife, therapist/ husband, therapist/wife, as a couple therapist) patterns that can provide different types or styles. To develop and evaluate different therapeutic approaches according to different and specific triadic patterns clusters. To determine if the use of relational drawing improves the process/outcome in couples treatments although facilitate the detections and repair alliances ruptures Compare RDVA in triadic systems as an instrument to evaluate therapeutic alliances with quantitative measures
