Tuck Everlasting Novel Study Name:_____________ For the first novel study of the year you will be studying the book ____________________. The novel study will consist of three main components. - literature circle discussions - comprehension/discussion questions - novel activities Your literature circles and novel activities will mostly be completed in class. You will have some class time to complete your discussion questions in class however you may find you need to complete some of them for homework. Comprehension/Discussion questions and novel activities are listed on the following pages. Comprehension/Discussion questions should follow the APE format discussed in class and should be proofread for spelling and grammar errors. The answers should be detailed enough that you are able to earn the marks allocated to each question. Your answers should be a polished product that fully answer the question with evidence and support from the novel. A reminder that a polished product is one that is neat and legible. Novel activities should also be polished and detailed. Some of the novel activities may be done with classmates however you must check with the teacher before choosing to complete an activity as a group activity. Students who are disruptive to others (mainly through being loud or being silly) will no longer be allowed to work in groups and the activity will need to be re-started independently.

I understand that I will likely need to complete some of the discussion questions for homework. I understand that I have a responsibility to my discussion group to be an active, on-task participant. I understand that if I am disruptive to others when I work in a group Ms. Drouillard will remove me from the group and I will lose the work I have already completed.

Due Date for Discussion Questions and Novel Activities: ________________________

Tuck Everlasting Discussion Questions You must complete a total of 28 marks of discussion questions. These questions are to be completed independently. As a guideline, each answer must be in paragraph form and should be a minimum of half a page long (not skipping lines). Remember to answer each part of the question and to support your opinions with evidence from the novel. Remember to add detail to your answers and proof-read your work. 1) Why is it important (or even necessary) that Mae killed the Man in the Yellow Suit (instead of Tuck or Jesse killing him)? (8 marks) 2) Why is Tuck’s reaction to the murder (on pg 102-103) included in Babbitt’s description of the event? (4 marks) 3) The symbol of the wheel is used by Babbit throughout the novel (from prologue to epilogue). Use a minimum of 3 examples from the book to explain why this is an important symbol and what it represents. (10 marks) 4) Why is it essential to this novel that Winnie has a crush (or is in love with) Jesse? (4 marks) 5) The toad is a perplexing symbol in Tuck Everlasting. Explain what you think the toad symbolizes and use proof from the text to support your thinking. (8 marks) 6) On page 62 and 63, Babbit has included a beautiful explanation of the Tucks position in life. Taking into consideration what Tuck is saying to Winnie, would you drink from the magical spring? Why or why not? (7 marks) 7) Give your personal opinion of the Man in the Yellow Suit. Point to at least 2 scenes in the book that have lead you to feel that way about him. (4 marks) 8) While we have focused in class on several key symbols (wheel, toad and water), Babbitt has used other symbols to hide her lessons. Explore a symbol apart from the three discussed in class. Use specific examples from the text to show how and why Babbitt uses this symbol. (10 marks) 9) Why did Winnie give her toad eternal life? Do you think she did it a service or a disfavour by pouring magical water on it? (4 marks) 10) What do you think Babbitt would say about our modern society? Use evidence from the text to support your reasoning. (6 marks) 11) What does the description of the Tuck house tell the reader about their position in life? Use examples from the book to help support your answer. (4 marks)

Novel Activities You must complete 20 marks of the following activities. You may complete the following activities in groups if you have Ms. Drouillard sign your booklet before you start. Remember you should be striving to create a polished product. 1) Many people in our society would leap at the chance to stay young forever. In fact TV viewers and magazine readers are constantly bombarded with products that promise to keep you looking young. Yet Tuck Everlasting warns against this quest for eternal life. Design and create a magazine ad or TV ad that stressed the benefits of getting older. (7 marks) 2) Create a visual representation of the entire book of Tuck Everlasting. Your piece of art should contain important scenes/symbols and could show how they interact with each other. The school can only provide “normal” art supplies but you are welcome to provide your own. (5 marks) 3) Create a new front and back cover for Tuck Everlasting that shows your understanding of the novel. (3 marks) 4) Tuck Everlasting has a somewhat happy ending. Re-write the last few chapters of the book depicting what Babbitt’s world would look like if Mae didn’t kill the Man in the Yellow Suit. (10 marks) 5) In Tuck Everlasting Babbitt warns us about the dangers of ownership and getting more stuff. Create a presentation (2 to 10 minutes) that highlights the effects of our consumer society. What are the advantages/disadvantages of advertisements and buying power? (6 marks) 6) Create a visual timeline of the book. The timeline should include all major and most minor events in the book. Ensure your work is visually appealing, neat, colourful and complete. (4 marks) 7) Create a comic that summarizes Tuck Everlasting. The main plot must remain the same but you may take creative license with the events and characters. (5 marks) 8) Choose another activity of your choice. You must check the activity with Ms. Drouillard and have a contract signed before you begin. (Marks TBA)
