Community Health Honors Program Application Directions to Students The Honors Program in community health is open to talented second, third and fourth year students who will plan, implement and evaluate an in-depth community health experience of at least 120 hours over a one year period. This program is open to students working at sites in the local Philadelphia area, as well as international community health programs, including the East Meets West Foundation in Vietnam as well as collaborative efforts with the Schools of Nursing and Medicine. Specific community programs approved for the Honors program include: Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Chinatown Clinic, Homeless Health Initiative, LIFE, United Community Clinics, University City Hospitality Coalition, and Sayre Health Center. Students may petition for the inclusion of other community programs As part of the application, students are requested to attach a two page proposal that describes the community health program objectives, activities, and evaluation mechanisms, the student’s role in the project as well as the expected outcomes for the student, community site and members served by the project. Students must identify a site supervisor who provide liaison with faculty in the School of Dental Medicine as well as provide on-site supervision in the community project. Once applications are submitted, the faculty review team will conduct an interview with the student as well as a site visit with the site supervisor and student to clarify responsibilities and site supervision. Admission to the honors program in community health is competitive, based on a quality review of the proposal and community health site, especially the student’s ability to complete the project as proposed as well as the suitability of the community site to support the community health project. Students must complete monthly progress reports and submit a final year-end report regarding the completion of the community health project as part of the honors program. Applicants must speak to Dr. Gluch prior to submitting a completed application during the development of their proposal. Research Honors Program Application Student Selection Criteria: Students must have an undergraduate science GPA of 3.5 and subsequently maintain a minimum 3.25 GPA throughout Dental School. They must also provide the selection committee with a letter of recommendation from either a past or current research supervisor as indicated on page 1 of the application. Candidates will be selected based on the quality of the proposed program and demonstrated interest and aptitude for research. Directions to Students The Honors Program in research is open to talented incoming, first or second year students who will plan, implement and execute a hypothesis-driven research project over a one to two year period. In exceptional cases third year students may apply. Students apply for the research Honors Program either prior to their admission to Dental school or within their first or second year at SDM. Students must identify a research mentor and develop a research project. As part of the application, students are requested to attach a two page proposal that describes the hypothesis, significance, background and experimental design of the proposed study. The literature cited can be included in subsequent pages. The student with the aid of the mentor is expected to provide a time line for completion of the proposed studies. In addition, the mentor is required to provide short description of the student’s role in the project. Once applications are submitted, the faculty will review the research proposal and may conduct an interview with the student. Admission to the Honors Program in research is competitive, based on a quality review of the proposal and the student’s ability to complete the project as proposed as well as the suitability of the laboratory to support the hypothesis driven research project. Clinical Dentistry Honors Program Application Student Selection Criteria: To be eligible for the program students must have obtained a minimum of 650 equivalents at the end of third year and they must be ranked among the top 40% with their performance on all restorative didactic courses including first, second and third year. Students must maintain a minimum 3.25 GPA throughout their Honors Program. Directions to Students The Honors Program in clinical dentistry is open to talented fourth year students, with application at the end of the third year. As part of the application, students are requested to attach a detailed program plan which describes the scope, goals, and objectives, of their involvement in the honors clinic as well as the recommendation of the PCU leader, as indicated on page 1. Once applications are submitted, the faculty review team will review the submitted documents and may conduct an interview with the student. Admission to the Honors Program in clinical dentistry is competitive, based on prior clinical performance and quality of the submitted documents.
