ASHRAE Sa Sayss . . . “…[gas [gas phase] air cleaners may decrease the vulnerability of the building against gas-phase environmental challenges.” g “The design for ultimate protection . . . . is a very costly option. option ” “Heightened efficiency can be attained costeffectively with . . . MERV 13 through 16 filters . . . and solid bed commercial grade air cleaners.” ASHRAE. U S A m CoE Sa U.S. Army Sayss . . . Because most facilities are not designed to accommodate sophisticated filtration systems, the US Armyy Corps p of Engineers g has recommended that Shelters in Place (SIP) be designated for individuals to assemble in the event of a biological or chemical attack. “Recirculation filter units can be employed to increase the protection achieved by sheltering in place.” U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. (2001). “Protecting Buildings and their Occupants from Airborne Hazards.” TI 853-01. Washington, DC: U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.

Enhanced SIP An SIP unit MUST utilize both particulate and chemical filtration for the most complete protection against p g CB agents. g Traditional particulate filters are ineffective at removing CB agents agents.  A (minimum) 99.97% efficient HEPA filter is

designed to remove biological agents, but is i ff ti against ineffective i t chemical h i l agents. t

To remove chemical agents, systems must contain t i a NATO NATO-approved d impregnated i t d carbon. b 5

Enhanced SIP (2) To protect the function of the ASZM-TEDA carbon, a “guard bed” of caustic-impregnated activated carbon/activated / alumina media and potassium permanganate-impregnated activated alumina should be placed upstream to remove acidic gases specifically, and other reactive gases in general.
