The big news at Band of Outsiders is that designer Scott Sternberg is dissolving his women’s capsules, Boy. and Girl., and making Band a singular collection, from this resort season on. “They really are one in my mind,” he explained at this morning’s preview. “When Boy. launched, it was an extension of my menswear collection, lots of tailoring and designer prices. Girl. was meant to be the fluid side of Boy., so: dresses. But retailers were mixing the two, there was a lot of redundancy, and so why not combine them? Now there’s so much more clarity and consistency,” he said." " Resort was, indeed, a perfect blend of Band’s two former selves, with sharp, tailored suits and jackets matched to summery dresses and pretty cotton separates. “I was going to the backyard, by the pool, as opposed to being on a cruise ship,” Sternberg said about his inspiration. “It’s my version of the eighties, which means I was thinking about David Hockney.”" " In one look, a banded skirt was paired with a red leather moto jacket and a T-shirt printed with Breton stripes and a small, abstract Hockney-esque bird. (The bird was actually interpreted from the work of a young Israeli artist named Guy Yanai, who pays homage to Hockney in his paintings.) There was a sweater sewn in the likeness of one of Yanai’s paintings of one of Hockney’s paintings, too—it depicts a pool with palm trees and it’s very colorful and angular, and shown with a pale pink linen hopsack pant and blazer. Gardening jodhpurs, seersucker jumpers, and trim little jackets with very cropped sleeves are all young, clever, and easy to wear. One silk georgette sweatshirt shown with a cotton skirt made from shirting fabric is “the sporty stuff that’s always been part of Boy., put it in a feminine context.”" " The dressier looks—“it sounds funny to me to use the word evening,” Sternberg confessed—included a silk T-shirt attached in the back to a long black skirt, and a wool-and-satin sleeveless coatdress. “It took me so long to realize the value of dresses for women, and how easy they can make her life,” the designer confessed. That they can, Scott, and we’re so happy you’re making them, still."

In the beginning, there was Boy and lo, it was good. But then Boy begat Girl, and really, Band begat both, and the whole thing begat complications for retailers and editors alike. Scott Sternberg, designer of the whole lot, was not insensitive to this. He's renamed the whole enterprise— men's and women's both—Band of Outsiders. Lo: Now that's good." " Semantics is a relatively small part of fashion, but the simplification not only eased the usual wonderings about what was what and which went where, but also gave Sternberg a chance to revisit some past hits. As an added bonus, the women's lineup gelled nicely with the men's collection, too: The designer had in mind the musical spectacle he staged at Pitti Uomo two years back, for all the collections the label made. So this outing had some of that fifties-meets-eighties flavor, with drop-sleeved leather jackets, skinny cigarette pants, and flat loafers. But then there was a multicolored version of the bandage skirt Band has been selling for seasons, and a collection of soft, silky maxi dresses like those Sternberg once showed for Girl. Add in those pieces that were cross-pollinated from the menswear—the dégradé anorak, for instance—and the immersion in Band World felt complete." " On the side of newness were prints and intarsias by the Israeli artist Guy Yanai, commissioned by Sternberg to give a Resort feel: bright, poppy blocks of saturated colors, and Hockney-esque swimming pools surrounded by supersize palm trees."

Scott Sternberg, the California whiz kid behind Band of Outsiders, tapped Israeli artist Guy Yanai, himself inspired by David Hockney's "A Bigger Splash," for a series of geo-abstract prints depicting a blockier sort of Beverly Hills midcentury idyll across BOO’s sporty tops and dresses."

It’s been six years since Scott Sternberg started his preppy cool collection, so with new backing in place and a New York store in the works, it seemed the perfect time to recall and reinvigorate favorite shapes. He kicked things off with his signature well-cut suiting in sweet pink linen, worn with a colorful merino wool intarsia sweater that referenced David Hockney. The peaked shoulders from his fall collection came back — this time as a mini coatdress — and the jumpsuit, which has become a real customer favorite, emerged in white-and-black silk satin topped with a white leather blazer."

The first thing to note about the Band of Outsiders Resort 2014 showing was that the branding was sleekly streamlined, with all labels bearing the same name, rather than the oft-confusing Boy or Girl prefix (a change for this season!). Secondly, after the usual nautical influence and preppy garden-party pieces, a strong nod to the '90s grabbed our attention. Bold block prints in Crayola colors seemed straight out of a Saved by the Bell afternoon at The Max, while boxy shoulders looked like an '80s hangover that bled, subdued, into the next decade." " That's not to say it's a time warp that turned us off — far from it! The strong shapes and silhouettes, whether it was tux-inspired rompers, roomy leather jackets, or dresses meant to look like a crop top and maxi, have something to offer any type of dresser."
