The DIWA principle has proven itself but stays young: The long DIWA driving range – where others have to shift gears (up to 50% more frequently), the DIWA transmission holds its own. This is comfortable and safer for standing passengers; it also means less wear on clutch plates and hence longer service life. Driving and braking with one circuit – and therefore fast response and precise adjustment of the retardation effect. The latter is achieved by controlled converter drainage.

The transmissions and gear-shifting programmes are adapted to the environmentally friendly low-emission EURO 3 engines. An electronic-hydraulic control system improves the gear-shifting quality of the transmission in such a way that changes from one gear to the next are virtually imperceptible. As far as CAN is concerned, Voith Turbo is the first manufacturer of transmissions worldwide who has been utilising this technology for years in series-manufactured control systems. An acceleration-dependent gear-shifting programme measures the acceleration and the load conditions of the bus and automatically selects the most economical gear-shifting points. One gearshifting programme is sufficient for all operating conditions. The unique PC diagnosis system controls and records the transmission functions whether the bus is driving or stopping. This includes the facility of monitoring the main operation data.

Voith principle: Driving and braking in one circuit

DIWA transmissions are continuously adapted to the latest technical developments in the commercial vehicle sector.

Other advantages are the integration of the filter in the transmission housing, the smaller stainless steel heat exchanger in design for longer service life, the further development of the torsional vibration damper for lower engine speeds, in order to reduce fuel consumption, as well as the automatic ANS neutral stage which separates engine and transmission completely when the vehicle is at a halt. Maintenance intervals are now every 60,000 kilometres, or – if partly or fully synthetic oils are used – every 120,000 kilometres.

A hydraulic torsional vibration damper at the transmission input side effectively absorbs engine vibrations. Gear changes are carried out electrohydraulically with patented solenoid valves; the gear-shifting commands are given by the digital control system. The heat exchanger of Voith automatic transmissions is integrated in the cooling circuit of the engine.

The heart of the transmission is the hydrodynamic converter, acting as a counter-rotating torque converter. Situated in front of it are the pump brake, the lock-up clutch, the differential gearbox for power-splitting, the input clutch and, with DIWA four speed transmissions, the clutch for the fourth gear which is designed as overdrive. Behind the converter, an epicyclical gear combines the hydrodynamic and the mechanical powers. The final epicyclical gear set (7) is for reversing and activating the retarder during braking.

Digital processing of electric engine signals such as EDC, electronic throttle control etc. The adaptive control system ensures automatic adjustment to engine and vehicle and is therefore a prerequisite for continuously high gear-shifting quality throughout the entire service life of the unit. Easy data exchange allows adaptation to new conditions (engine, vehicle, driving conditions). CAN-compatible PC-based diagnosis system DIWAgnosis enables accurate diagnosis of transmission condition and efficient failure search Compatible with Mercedes-Benz STAR diagnosis system. Operating data storage allows collection of key vehicle data.
