Dear Parents, Please click on the link below to have a look at the experiences we had in Vietnam recently through the Reach Vietnam Project. You will see some of the benefits to this community from the funds raised earlier this year through your generous donations. The staff (Anne Jordan, Louise Hill, Beth Humphries, Liz Windmeyer, Fr Linh and I) who participated in the project this year, covered all our own expenses and ensured that every dollar that was raised reached the people in Kon Tum. It was a very rewarding time for us and we’ve brought lots of new thinking back to share with our children, both in developing their understandings of children in another country with different needs to ours and in expanding our knowledge of the Studies of Asia – Vietnam in particular on this occasion. Thank you everyone who supported us, it was a most worthwhile experience on many levels for our whole community. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fjb_-ZxVEdo

We wish to congratulate and thank all parents (particularly those who coordinate fundraising activities through P&F functions), for the contribution of $21,000 to the school, to support the school programs and facilities in 2013. This includes $8,000 raised at the Fathers Day Golf tournament – a very successful event on many levels apparently. The 2 main roles of the P&F are fundraising and organisation of social activities that include all parents, and every year this is done very well at St Therese. At the moment we are seeking quotes for a number of upgrades to some of the playground facilities as well as additions to the classroom equipment, which will support the learning and teaching at St Therese. We will let you know what the staff have identified as most important, once we have the costs in and are able to prioritise our needs. The Prep enrolment number for 2014 is 70, so at this stage, if there aren’t too many more applications before next year, we will have 3 Prep class groupings. I am currently meeting individually with every staff member (teaching and non-teaching) for their Annual Review Meetings. At these we discuss their year, their professional development needs/requests for the future and their teaching year level preferences for the coming year.

Achievements: On Saturday 18th October, Max Aitken danced with the Geelong Ballet Centre for their annual concert. He performed several pieces in both the matinee and the evening performance and was a sight to behold! He exhibited all the strength, grace and energy necessary for such a feat as he lit up the stage with his contemporary and classical pieces. He showed great resilience and the spirit of ‘the show must go on’ by dancing in the evening, after damaging a hamstring in the matinee performance. He topped off a remarkable day by receiving a scholarship to the Geelong Dancing Academy for 2014! We congratulate Max and wish him every success as he continues with both the Geelong Ballet School and the Melbourne Dance Academy [Russian].

Athletics: On Monday the 28th of October, Mia Gross, Evie Bayes and Lilly Moore went to Albert Park and represented St Therese in the State Athletic Championships. The girls all did wonderfully well with Mia and Evie going to Queensland in November to participate in the Australian School Athletic Titles. Unfortunately for Lilly, there is no hurdles event in the Australian Titles but we are very proud of all three girls and wish Mia and Evie all the very best in Queensland.

SUSTAINABILITY NEWS:

St Therese is a 4 Star School Recently we received word from Sustainability Victoria that St Therese Primary School is officially a 4 Star Sustainable School. Our school has been a part of the Sustainable Schools Project since 2009 and has been working hard to reduce its carbon footprint, show community leadership and educate students and families about the importance of being waste and resource wise. There are only 3 schools in the South West Barwon region which are 5 star schools and this year hopefully our school will add to that group. We appreciate the support we get from families who encourage their children to bring nude food and who travel sustainably to school and we look forward to your continued support in the future.

Barwon Water Poster Competition Last Wednesday Fernando Garcia from Barwon Water presented our school with a cheque for $500 after some of our students won prizes as part of Barwon Water’s National Water Week Poster Competition. Congratulations to Evie Bayes for coming 3rd and Elk McCausland for coming 1st in the Year 4 category. Congratulations also to Isabelle Korth for coming 2nd and Cameron Blackley for coming 3rd in the Year Prep category. Cameron, Elke, Evie and Isabelle accepting a cheque from Fernando to be put toward the schools sustainability initiatives.

Tree Planting at Black Rock- St Therese is a Carbon Neutral School

Year 3/4 students planted over 400 trees on Wednesday the 30th of October at Black Rock, near 13th Beach. The students added to the total of about 400 trees they planted earlier in the year with the help of the 5/6 students. All of this planting has enabled St Therese Primary School to call itself a carbon neutral school for its energy use in 2012. This is the second year our school has planted enough trees to offset its electricity usage. Last year we planted around 400 moonahs at Whites Beach. This is a great achievement by the staff and students at our school and is certainly something we will be looking at continuing in the future. Students planting trees at the Black Rock site this week.

Extend After School Care at St Therese Primary School: Hi Everyone, We have been taking advantage of the warmer weather, with cricket now being popular especially with the girls. Please remember that because of our sunsmart policy, everyone needs to wear a shady hat of some description. Please make sure that your child has one in his or her bag. This week was Birthday Week and we also had some fun making hats for the cup. Next week will be a three day week and we plan to do some cooking. We will also have the "Torquay Cup" with novelty races and a picnic afternoon tea each afternoon, weather permitting. - Cheers from the staff at Extend OSHC Small gestures make a BIG difference! Term 4 see’s the launch of our Extend-a-Hand annual Project and we would love your children to be a part of it. We hope to empower and inspire our children by asking them ‘What small gestures can YOU make to help others and the community?’ Children at Extend After School Care will be brainstorming ideas on how they can make a difference and then will use their creativity to showcase these. The project will run from Monday 28 October to Friday 8 November. Maybe they can paint a picture. Create a sculpture. Perform a Skit. Create a collage. Write a poem. The opportunities are endless. A collection of photos and videos will be taken of the artworks and an official video will be published to celebrate the end of the project. Watch this space in November to see the official video* *Parent consent forms are available at your service. Please speak to your Team Leader.
