What The Affiliate-Marketing Gurus Don’t Tell You By: Anthony Kirlew

I am on a mission to expose all of the online-marketing gurus making bogus claims and giving the industry a bad name. There are so many people out there making these instant-success claims, and I really wish there was some accountability within the industry. Here’s an example of what I mean: if you’ve been convinced to buy someone’s program, after reading their hyped-up sales pitch complete with all the megaincome screenshots, don’t you assume that you can make that kind of money? It’s sickening, especially to me because I have no desire to be lumped in with the scam artists in the business. Please continue reading, and I’ll explain in detail why I’m so upset about what the gurus have done. I’ll also give you some honest, straight talk about the affiliatemarketing business, and recommend a few solid resources that you can buy and use with confidence.

I. DECEPTION & MISCONCEPTIONS First off, I want to emphasize a few things about affiliate marketing so you know exactly what you are getting into, and don’t have any misconceptions about the business and your chances of success. 1. Affiliate Marketing Is A Business It costs less money to start than most traditional businesses, but regardless of what you read on various “sales sites” for Clickbank systems, it is not a get-richquick scheme. Nor, if you’re serious about it, can you treat it as a hobby and find success. It takes time, has a learning curve (especially for newer affiliate marketers), and requires a commitment to keeping up with the market to be successful. 2. Don’t Believe All The Sales Talk To create their screenshots showing monthly incomes figures in the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars, many of the alleged gurus spend THOUSANDS of -1Copyright 2007, Anthony Kirlew http://www.AffiliateGurusExposed.com

dollars per month, and HOURS of work, just setting up paid-ad campaigns (usually through Google’s AdSense program), just to create the screenshots shown on their web sites. What they’re not telling you is that to make $20,000 in a month, they might have spent $18,000 (not to mention debits for product returns, which are not displayed on the screenshots!). 3. Not Everyone Makes Money In Affiliate Marketing It’s just not for everyone. It is, however, a great opportunity to make some extra money, learn a lot about business and marketing in the process, and has the potential to develop into a full-time occupation. Affiliate marketing is not something you suddenly commit to, as a full-time job, if you need money to pay your monthly bills. Given that there are over 100,000 Clickbank affiliate marketers (not to mention the other affiliate networks) realize that most affiliate marketers make very little money at all, regardless of how many programs they buy. I don’t say that to be negative, but to say that you really have to work at it. You need to be willing to invest the time to learn the business, not just look for the next guru to tell you how to make your Clickbank income climb. 4. Affiliate Fraud Is Rampant Sadly, one of the problems with affiliate marketing is “id theft”. Not Identity theft, but “affiliate ID” theft, where a buyer may strip out your affiliate ID link during the sales process, and replace it with their own. This reduces their out-of-pocket cost, but eliminates your income. (My book, Clickbank Profit Secrets, shows you one method of reducing this, but more on that later.) 5. Your Skills Will Help Determine Your Success People with web-design and Internet-marketing skills will do FAR better than those without. Again, this is part of the affiliate-marketing learning curve. A lot of the product testimonials you read are by people who are already successful in affiliate marketing due to their skills and experience – or they may even be flatout lies I am not saying you can’t be successful without these skills, but don’t beat yourself up wondering why “everyone” is making more money than you in affiliate marketing. The success stories you read may be due, in large part, to the Internet and marketing skills these people developed on their way to success. 6. Big Success Is Not Typical You may be surprised to learn this, but very few people EVER make the kind of money that the gurus show on their websites. In fact, it is the extremely unusual for the average person to make a five-figure income after reading one ebook, or buying one affiliate-marketing course. Most people who make significant income in affiliate marketing have been in the business for some time, and continue to learn and develop their systems to reach that level of success. -2Copyright 2007, Anthony Kirlew http://www.AffiliateGurusExposed.com

That guy who swept floors and then went on to earn $10,000 in two weeks after buying and applying one guru’s system? The exception – not the rule. There is no explanation as to why it worked out like this for that one guy (assuming it really did), but its rare – extremely rare. Just about all stories I’ve heard of “newbie success” involved a guru coming alongside the newcomer and actually showing him what to do – coaching him to success and helping him avoid mistakes as he went along (rather than having to learn from them like the rest of us!). 7. The Gurus Have A Big Head-Start On Everyone Else Most of the gurus make what they make because they have invested time and money over years, and have developed HUGE mailing lists that they market to. This is really one of the most important factors in affiliate-marketing success! Sure, you can set up an AdWords (or other pay-per-click) campaign and drive traffic to an affiliate link, but the real, long-term profit lies in building a targeted mailing list of your own to market to. Many affiliate-marketing experts really have no intention of helping you learn the business. Instead, they want to keep selling you more and more of their own products. I think this makes me more upset than anything else about this business, and is why I’m writing this report. Read below to find out how to learn the basics (I will show you how, because I really do want you to achieve your own success!) Learn them well. Resist the “noise” of a better offer for more earnings, and the stories of how “Joe Average” went from living in his car, to living in a castle on the beach, in the space of a few months. It’s just not reality. These stories are written to appeal to the get-richquick mindset that gurus exploit.

II. HOW YOU CAN SUCCEED IN AFFILIATE MARKETING You CAN succeed in affiliate marketing (and even become an affiliate marketing “guru” yourself!) if you take the right steps. Here are the non-negotiable qualities you will need to succeed: 1. Focus Stop listening to everybody that wants to tell you how to make a buck – you will be confused by all the conflicting claims, systems and “hot” new products. If you’ve subscribed to a bunch of guru email lists, unsubscribe from all of them until you have mastered the basics (I will show you how, below). I also suggest you turn off the TV, stop playing video games, stop downloading music, or stop doing whatever it is that sucks up your time and will keep you from achieving affiliate-marketing success. (I’m not suggesting you become a hermit, living by the glow of your computer screen! But I’m sure you can identify a number of time-wasting activities, and make the decision to give them up while you pursue business success and financial independence.) 2. A Plan. You’ve likely heard the saying “no one plans to fail, they just fail to plan”. That applies to traditional business, and even more so to online business because people often pay so little to get into an online business, they don’t realize they are in business! The “barriers to entry” for Net-based businesses are so low, you can easily buy a domain, set up a website and autoresponder, and be building a list within a couple of days. It seems so easy, the temptation is not to plan ahead. If, however, you actually take a little time to think ahead and write a business plan (don’t worry, it’s not hard!) for your affiliate-marketing business, you will likely be in the top 1% of all affiliate marketers – because almost no one actually tries to build a plan for their affiliate-marketing business! Though a business plan can contain many elements, it can also be as easy as writing down: • •

your goals for the business, and your goals for what you will do with the money you eventually make from the business.

Many years ago (1991,) as I was meeting at lunch with one of my Millionaire Mentors, he asked me to describe my goals to him.. I started talking, and he asked me if my goals were written down. I said no, and he pushed a napkin -4Copyright 2007, Anthony Kirlew http://www.AffiliateGurusExposed.com

over to me and told me to write them down. About a week later, he asked me again about my goals, and told me, If you can’t articulate your goals, you will never achieve your goals”. Thankfully, that lesson sank in. Today, I continue to review and adjust my goals almost daily. It makes sense: if you aim at nothing, that’s what you will hit. If you aim high, you’ll at least be going upward. If you reach your goal, set a new, higher goal. The key to goal-setting is to make sure you don’t start with too lofty of a goal, or you will be discouraged. Here are some sample goals you might want to start with: -

Write out my business plan

Write out my goals (business & personal)

Notice how I wrote those sample goals in reverse order? It’s not a bad idea to write your ultimate goal first, and then work backward through the steps you think it will take to get there. When you get to the end (which is actually the beginning: “Write out my goals”), you can flip the list around and follow the path you’ve established for yourself. Just keep your goals flexible and easy to change in response to life events. Once you get going, you can refine and extend your list of goals, to include ones like the following: 1. Earn an extra $100 per month in affiliate marketing 2. Earn an extra $500 per month in affiliate marketing| 3. Earn an extra $1,000 per month in affiliate marketing 4. Diversify my Internet Marketing Interests (see the last section for recommendations for other online businesses)


5. Earn an extra $2,000 per month in affiliate marketing 6. Earn $5,000 per month in affiliate marketing You get the point? Start slow, and build from there. 3. Consistency and Perseverance Make a commitment to yourself, to work on your goals and achieve them. While it’s great to have a cheerleader or “accountability partner” to nudge you forward, ultimately it’s up to you. No one else will work to help you succeed, until you take one, and then another and another, step toward progress and ultimate success.

4. A Right Mindset I could have made this the number-one, -two or -three point, but I think it works best here because it goes along with consistency and perseverance. What I mean by “a right mindset” is simply this: you need to believe in what you are doing – believe in the products you are selling. You need to believe that the affiliate-marketing business model works when applied seriously. Most of all, you need to believe that you have a $100,000-per-year business. Then, and only then, will you treat it that way (seriously) and do what needs to be done to earn the money you want to earn. Many of the affiliate-marketing success stories worked HARD to get where they are today (myself included). Most likely, you will NOT make a lot of money the first month after you buy any affiliate-marketing education product. (I sure didn’t!) Your first month – or two or three, even –should be spent learning and working on your plan and your goals, but the gurus don’t tell you that. Through a constant stream of enticing emails, they fill your mind with hyped-up dreams and stories of some guy who made a five-figure income after using their program – or someone else’s. Very often, however, beginners buy programs that are too advanced and complicated, and get discouraged because it seems, well, too advanced and complicated! (I will show you where to go for the basics.)


III. THE “TO-DOs” OF AFFILIATE-MARKETING SUCCESS In the previous section, I explained how it is possible to succeed in the affiliatemarketing business. Unfortunately, knowing facts isn’t enough. There are plenty of affiliate-marketing wannabes who have stuffed their minds with all the knowledge, but have not actually stepped out, followed through, and taken stepby-step actions to begin building a successful business. If you are one of these people, please read the following recommendations, and then do them! 1. Decide If Affiliate Marketing Is Right For YOU There are plenty ways to make money online (which I will discuss in a minute) and affiliate marketing is just one of them. Let me say it again: affiliate marketing is not for everyone. Before you can know if it’s right for you or not, you need to learn enough to understand the industry. This report provides you with references to all of the resources you need to succeed in affiliate marketing. Please trust me on this. Advanced Affiliate-Marketing Training Resources AFTER having learned and mastered the basics, you can learn additional techniques to advance your affiliate earnings. 2. FOCUS On Building Your Business. I’m going to repeat what I stated above (it’s that important!) Once you’ve read the Super Affiliate Handbook thoroughly, and understand its concepts, my strong recommendation is to unsubscribe from all other ezines and guru mailing lists. Why am I so insistent upon this, you ask? You need to master the basics first, and you don’t need all the background noise from all of these outside sources. Believe me, I tried it, and was distracted and discouraged as I tried to keep up with all the new, exciting, over-hyped products and developments. I followed my own advice, and got off all the lists. As the saying goes, I stuck to my knitting. Success followed. If you’re concerned that you’ll be missing out on important industry developments, don’t worry. IV. OTHER WAYS TO MAKE MONEY ONLINE If, after purchasing and reading Rosalind Gardner’s Super Affiliate Handbook, you decide that affiliate marketing is not for you; or, if you want to add additional profit centers to your existing online business, I encourage you to check out one of the following additional ways earn online income. This is not theory, but reality, as I currently earn money using all of these techniques. 1. Google AdSense I am sure you have heard about Google’s AdSense advertising platform for website and blog owners. It is one of the best services that Google offers, in my opinion, and it’s a great way to make money BUT you need to know more than the basics to make serious money with it. To get started, all you need to do is register for FREE for a Google AdSense account (you can do that here: http://www.affiliategurusexposed.com/ASRegister), paste a code snippet to your blog or website (which you get from your AdSense account), and start to earn money when visitors click on the AdSense ads that appear on your site’s pages. Google will ensure that ads you see will be related to the topic of your web site’s pages, so the chances are good that some visitors will click on the ads. Sounds simple enough, and it is easy to get started, but to make serious money to speak of takes time or some guidance from someone who has been there. Here are some pointers on building an AdSense revenue stream with different models. A. Blogs This is probably the simplest way to get started, since Google also provides FREE blogs (at www.blogger.com). Here is a simple guide showing you how to get up and running in 5 simple steps: 1. Register for a FREE Google AdSense account at: http://www.affiliategurusexposed.com/ASRegister 2. Open a free blog at http://www.blogger.com 3. Activate your AdSense account through your Blogger dashboard (you will use the same logins from step 1.) 4. Start writing. The key to making money through AdSense is having content on your site. A great way to get content is to create it by blogging. come more naturally to you and you will be able to get more content up in a shorter time frame. Try to blog every day, as this will rapidly build your blog’s content, and increase your AdSense revenue potential. 5. Promote your blog by using the free service at http://www.pingomatic.com. Every time you make a post on your blog, go to Pingomatic and submit it. Your blog post will be automatically indexed at a number of the most popular blog search engines. Google AdSense expert Joel Comm has put out a FREE, 30-page guide on how to get a blog up and running with AdSense. You can download it here: http://www.affiliategurusexposed.com/AdSense

B. Web Sites. You can use AdSense on any existing web site, but keep in mind that if it is not implemented correctly, AdSense ads have the potential to detract from your site’s credibility and cost you money from lost customers. You can also use web templates created especially for use with AdSense, and buy targeted content as well. The challenge is that if you get content from a disreputable source, you will likely end up with content that is not unique and may have been sold to hundreds, if not thousands of people prior. This will reduce its effectiveness, as search engines may see it as spam or irrelevant “duplicate content.” (You don’t want that – trust me.) AdSense expert Joel Comm has a program through which he allows a limited number of people to purchase his AdSense web templates. I will tell you up front, you do need to have some web design / development experience to make this work effectively. The good news is that he has prepared his templates for multiple platforms such as phpbb, WordPress, XSitePro, etc. If your eyes just glazed over, this is probably not for you (at least, not yet!). You can check it out here: http://www.affiliategurusexposed.com/adsense-templates Finally, here is a short list of things that will for sure keep you from being successful with AdSense: 1. Not getting started. It is easier not to start than to start. 2. Violating Google’s Terms of Service (TOS). This is a business, and Google is one of your vendors. You need to know the terms by which they allow you to make money via AdSense, or they can shut you down and you will have no say in the matter.


3. Clicking the AdSense ads on your own blogs and web sites, or having other people click on these ads. NEVER DO THIS, NOT EVEN TO TEST – End of story – you have been warned. Google tracks click patterns from IP addresses, so you will get caught quickly, and your AdSense account will be closed. 4. Not setting up your ads correctly. There is a science to this that involves specific use of colors and placement. 5. Not Testing, Analyzing, and Revising as you go. This is a learning process and you as you learn you will want to implement what you learn. And trust me; you WILL make more money as you grow. So where does one go to learn all about making money with AdSense in the shortest amount of time? My recommendation is to use Joel Comm’s tools. Joel is the #1 AdSense Trainer in the industry. 2. Use The Web As A Lead Generating Tool No matter what kind of business you run, you can rest assured there is a customer base waiting for you online. Instead of investing time and money promoting someone else’s business via affiliate marketing, you can promote your business. If you don’t have a web site, you need one – it’s just that simple. If you don’t know how to build a web site and want to give it a go, I recommend the wellknown system called Site Build It. 3. Selling Products Online Two of the most popular venues for selling online are eBay and Craigslist (partly owned by eBay). I have used, and continue to use both of these sites successfully over the past several years. In my opinion, eBay is a great platform for selling if you want to make a living by selling items (or services) online. It’s also an excellent way to ease yourself into online sales if you’re inexperienced. The site has lots of automation to help you get your listings live in the shortest amount of time, as well as features such as the eBay Store where you can list items for sale (rather than auction), and eBay Guides where you can promote yourself as an authority, increasing traffic to your eBay Store, offline business, and/or product listings. Craigslist.org is another selling venue, but it’s different in that it focuses on local markets. The platform is very simple; all you do is find your local area (or the area that you want to market) listed on the home page, then find a category and place your ad. You can upload pictures, and best of all it is free1. Here are some examples of how you can use Craigslist:

Sell products: You can sell anything - things you have laying around, products sold by your company, information products, real estate, or anything else. For example, view the categories under the “for sale” heading, in the Phoenix, AZ section of Craigslist:: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/

Sell Services: Craigslist has become a great way for local businesses to promote their services. Example: view the “services” heading to see what types of services are being offered in Phoenix: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/

Unlike eBay, selling on Craigslist is (usually) free and you can renew your ad as many times as you want2, but they do ask that you only place ads in one city at a time.

4. Network Marketing (Online). Network marketing (also known as multi-level marketing) is one of the oldest forms of business around. Love it or not, network marketing has generated riches for countless people, and has probably made more millionaires than affiliate marketing, AdSense, and eBay combined. I have made varying amounts of money in network marketing over the past 18 years, and to this day still earn residual commissions based on what I sowed into the business in years past. I have been a rep for several different companies, having built several teams and helping others achieve their financial goals through network marketing. I have also had the privilege of working with some of the top names in the industry – multi-million-dollar, residual-income earners. Here is what you need to know: A. Work Only With A Solid Company That Understands The Internet Network marketing has a long pre-Internet history, and some companies still haven’t figured out that the Web only helps, not hurts, their business. Excited, that is, until I got The Letter. In this letter, the parent company stated that they would not allow me to have “an unfair advantage against those who could not promote their sites online,” and encouraged me to “share the information with my friends, family, and colleagues.” I hope they got their act together, because they had some good products, but they lost me as a sales representative because they could not understand the power of the Internet to maximize product sales. Work Only With A Company That Offers A Great Compensation Plan If you are treating this as a business, you need to know how you are getting paid. Some companies ensure that the average person never gets paid, by setting unrealistic – or even unattainable – production quotas.
