THE NEWSLETTER OF The WILLIAMSBURG REGIONAL LIBRARY

Williamsburg welcomes david baldacci When best-selling novelist David Baldacci comes to Williamsburg on October 10 he'll be the featured speaker at "Reading between the Wines," a fundraiser benefiting Literacy for Life. He will also be welcomed as an honorary member of Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library. "We were thrilled to learn that Mr. Baldacci will be arriving next month, " explains Friends President Ted Hiller. "Many library users enjoy his books. We wanted to thank him for the pleasure he gives readers with an honorary Friends membership." Library Director John A. Moorman notes that David Baldacci also embraces one of the Williamsburg Regional Library's core values. "The library's Strategic Plan states that we value a literate community," he observes. "In addition to being an accomplished lawyer and extremely popular author, Mr. Baldacci is a tireless advocate for literacy. Given that commitment, it's natural for the library to reach out to him. We also support the work of Literacy for Life," he continues. "It's the only David Baldacci organization in Williamsburg that provides one-on-one tutoring for adults in reading, writing, math, and English as a second language." Assistant Director Genevieve S. Owens currently serves as Secretary on Literacy for Life's Board of Directors and Moorman is Past-President. "Reading between the Wines" will take place on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at the School of Education at the College of William and Mary. In addition to David Baldacci's presentation, the event will feature scrumptious food, delicious wine, and exciting auctions. Tickets are $60 through September 30. Remaining tickets will be available at $75. To purchase tickets visit www.literacyforlife.org/RBTW.

Supporting the library A well-known adage goes something like this: "the only constant that is certain is change." This year that has definitely been true. With political candidates vying for supremacy, the global economy a moving target, and Virginia weather being Virginia weather, some feel there is more change than stability. Yet, despite this perpetual unrest, the Williamsburg Regional Library hopes to offer some consistency through high caliber programming, collections, and staff. Studies show that most people prefer stability to change, which allows room for the suggestion that users of the library might be more content than non-library users (at least, when they can get their holds). The library's stability is a consequence of many factors. Among them is the excellent support received from local government funders and the generous private contributions from dedicated donors. Private giving to the library augments the funding received through public support. When someone makes a contribution to the library to purchase materials, joins the Friends, or supports the Library Foundation, that donor helps WRL's programs and resources remain consistent and excellent. Even with the relative stability WRL offers, change is all around. The library's printed materials, electronic collections, technology, and facilities are always in flux. This sort of change is welcomed. What also is welcomed is the change made possible through your support. That is a change that helps to ensure consistently excellent resources. Thank you for your help.
