WINTER 2013

Direct, personalized “precision medicine” is available for cancer patients at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. Rodney E. Shackelford, DO, PhD is the scientist who will actually run the sequencing. He comes to FWCC from Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Shackelford earned his PhD in Molecular Pathology from Duke University Medical Center and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from Des Moines University of Osteopathic Medicine. He is excited about working with the illumina MySeq because it has an extremely large capacity and the ability to compare millions of base pairs of DNA.

The illumina MySeq machine looks at gene changes that occur in an individual’s cancer cells so physicians can determine if there is a drug targeted specifically for that patient. The test is run on a biopsy of a patient’s cancer cells. Which particular cancer, such as breast or lung cancer for example, does not matter. Results are available in two to three weeks. Cancer is caused by changes in the genetic makeup. This may be activating hormones or by inhibiting or stopping a reaction to fight the change. “We hope we have the appropriate medicine for a specific patient,” said FWCC Director Dr. Glenn Mills. “By knowing exactly which gene is “driving” the cancer growth and spread, we can target that gene. We can avoid treatments that have no benefit and use only those we know have a chance of helping.” The illumina MySeq at Feist-Weiller is the only one in the area. FWCC is also the only cancer center in this area to belong to a unique network offering nationwide testing services. Additionally, the Center has begun a Molecular Tumor Board, which is a meeting for treating physicians and basic scientists to determine the best therapy for an individual patient. The illumina MySeq is reserved for patients who have failed other treatment protocols and have no remaining choices and for patients who are not responding to standard chemotherapy. Additionally Feist-Weiller Cancer Center patients might qualify medically for new drugs through the dozens of clinical trials available at academic cancer centers. Many of FWCC’s patients qualify and choose to participate in these experimental treatments. The illumina MySeq helps the doctors to decide if the drug will be effective. FWCC’s clinical trial participations rate is over three times the national average.

GLENN MILLS, MD FACP

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” This famous Dickens quote from A Tale of Two Cities seems very appropriate this month. Indeed there are many good things going on at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center (FWCC). We have a new partner in health care — the Biomedical Research Foundation has taken over the management of our hospital and is now University Health. Surprisingly this transition has gone spectacularly well for Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. There have been no major problems and in fact we have seen only marked improvements in the delivery of health care to our patients. At Feist-Weiller Cancer Center we have always prided ourselves that we always put patient needs first and provide our patients with efficient, top-notch care. Now our attitude of quality care is also being mirrored throughout the institution. Wait times are less, scheduling is better, and convenience to the patient is now the norm. We also have a new partner in our Partners In Wellness free cancer-screening program. LSU and Dallas Cowboys football great Bradie James has joined our team and will be a sponsor for our screening program in the Delta region of the state. We have also recruited Dr. Hari Koul, PhD, to be our new chair of Biochemistry in the School of Medicine. Dr. Koul is a world expert in prostate cancer research and will serve as the Deputy Director of Basic Research for Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. Over 80 members of Feist-Weiller Cancer Center’s staff including physicians, scientists, clinical research data managers and administrators participated in a two-day Cancer Research Retreat in early November. Discussions focused on what can be done to attract more research dollars for both the clinical, basic research and cancer prevention areas.

However, national events are taking place that are having a chilling effect on cancer research in general and threaten our continued world lead in biomedical research. At a time when almost every other nation is expanding research efforts, our country has made major cuts in research funding at the national level. Other nations realize the importance of innovation in not only improving the quality of life we have but also as an economic engine for their countries. The recently enacted sequestration has led to a 7.6% cut in research dollars. This event, paired with a stagnant budget for the last decade with no cost of living increases, has meant almost a 20% decrease in research support. This year only 7% of research grants will be funded on a national level — a historic low. This means only 1 in 15 scientists will receive support to investigate new treatments for cancer. It was not too long ago when the funding rate for research was 30% — or about 1 out of every 3 scientists. This dramatic decline means that now, more than ever, we need your continued support to support our research efforts here at FWCC. Hopefully, things will turn around and we are entering “an age of wisdom” and not that “age of foolishness” that Dickens wrote of in his novel. Now is the time, I believe, for a “season of hope & a season of light” — one that we can only accomplish by working together. The FWCC faculty, staff and I would like to wish all of you a Happy Holiday season and a great New Year!

Partners-in-Wellness

MOB I LE M A M M OGR A M VA N FEIST WEILLER CANCER CENTER’S Partners-in-Wellness launched a second mobile van over the summer. This one features a 3-D mammogram unit. The original mobile van was updated and moved to University Health – Conway to serve women in Northeast Louisiana.

HEARING AIDS

needed

Audiologists Jessica Beaver, April Daniel and Carie Rives want to fit donated hearing aids to cancer patients—giving the gift of hearing to patients at a difficult time. It was Jessica’s idea. She is a new staff member and brought the idea from a previous job.

Feist-Weiller Cancer Center is seeking the donation of hearing aids for our terminally ill cancer patients. FWCC audiologists will fit them to patients in need giving the gift of sound to patients for the remaining months of their lives. Hearing aides are not paid for by Medicare or Medicaid. For many the $1,500 – $3,000 average cost is just too expensive. FWCC’s three audiologist expect to be able to refit and recycle these devices over and over. They are Jessica Bever, AuD, CCC/A, Carie Rives, AuD, CCC/A, and April Daniel, M.A., CCC/A. If you have a hearing aide you would like to donate, please contact Anne Higdon at 318-813-1423.

USADance Representatives of USA Dance presented Feist-Weiller

Cancer Center Director Dr. Glenn Mills with a check for $860 raised at their annual USA Dance Black and White Ball with a Touch of Pink. This money is designated to cancer research. Making the presentation are Dr. Linda Nall, Suzanne Shriver, Dr. Mills and Merry Keller.

TREES OF

HOPE

at Sam’s Town

Feist-Weiller Cancer Center’s ARTS IN MEDICINE program is once again participating in Sam’s Town Trees of Hope. The tree has been decorated using ornaments painted by children and adult patients and their caregivers. Voting will take place from Thursday, November 28th through Thursday, December 12th, 2013. Winners will be announced on Friday December 13th at 7 pm in the Pavilion. Please stop by and cast your vote for Feist-Weiller’s tree! Sam’s Town is located at 315 Clyde Fant Parkway in Shreveport. Arts in Medicine won second place last year and received a $2,500 donation.

Arts

IN MEDICINE RECEIVES GRANT PLUM CREEK FOUNDATION representations Steve Hanley and April Nappier toured Feist-Weiller Cancer Center when they brought a $3,500 grant to support ARTS IN MEDICINE. While here they autographed one of the ribbons which will be used as part of the 2014 Christmas tree decorations in the Trees of Hope competition.

Fourth-grader GraceAnne Hodgson organized the 2nd Annual Cartwheel Over Cancer at South Highlands Elementary. Like a walk-a-thon, children take pledges based on the number of cartwheels they turn or hula-hoops they spin or jump rope they do. Last year the event raised $3,089 with 33 participants. This year the playground was filled with more kids participating!

ArtBreak awards

Feist-Weiller Cancer Center honored 50 young community artists whose works were selected at ArtBreak to hang in the hospital rooms of cancer patients for a year. Dr. Gary Burton presented certificates of appreciation to each artist. Their work has been framed and will be returned to each of them next September.
