With Joel and Priscilla Rappaport Presented by the Seattle Chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild Saturday April 6, 2013, 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Our Instructors: Joel and Priscilla have backgrounds that are quite unusual in their field. For over five years they worked in grand piano production in the Bechstein Factory in Berlin and the Bösendorfer factory in Vienna where their activities included all facets of the building, regulation, tuning, and voicing of grand pianos. They attended the school for piano builders in Ludwigsburg, Germany and passed the State Examinations for the Master Piano Builders Diploma at the Handwerkskammer in Stuttgart, the only two piano technicians in the U.S.A. to have done so. Today, Joel and Priscilla Rappaport operate Rappaport's Piano Workshop in Round Rock, Texas, and have rebuilt and serviced numerous concert grand pianos used in concert and recordings throughout Canada, the USA and Mexico. Prices for Seminar, including Lunch: • No charge Seattle Chapter PTG Member • $25 PTG Member, not Seattle • $50 Non-PTG Member

There will be Three Classes presented

“Burning   &   Traveling   -   What’s   the   Difference?”  1.5 hours Confused? These operations are used in spacing and alignment of the hammers to the strings. Methods of how and why this work affects regulation will be discussed and demonstrated. Techniques and standards of good hammer gluing will also be covered, since hammers must be glued properly in order to perform “Burning & Traveling” correctly.

“Holes  -  Drill  ‘Em  and  Fill  ‘Em”  3 hours Ever feel like you are just “plugging” along and not getting where you want to go fast enough? Well, this class is for you! Whenever you drill a hole in a piano you usually have to put something into it – right? Areas of interest include: Pinblocks, tuning pins, action holes, bushings, damper guide rails, holes in keys for weighing off the keys and much more. You can’t buy or sell a hole; you have to make them.

Grand  Action  Regulation” 1.5 hours Procedures – from the key bed up – for regulating a grand action. How to provide for stability of the regulation. Relationships and the order of the different steps. Choices of materials. How do we measure the end result? Freedom from specifications: they don’t always work!
