What Happened to Hannah Montana 

It’s easy to say that chasing fame is a corrupting process.

It’s easy to say that sin leads to more sin.

Something Deeper 

We live in an increasingly sexualized society.

We live in a world that tends to objectify women. When you objectify someone you see them as an object. You lose the reality of who that person is.

What are we to do?

Unless we weep at the exploitation and unless we weep over the brokenness, we miss the heart of God.

When you devalue another person you devalue yourself because you become less than Jesus designed you to be.

“I am a little pencil in the hand of a writing God, who is sending a love letter to the world.” Mother Teresa

Philippians 2:5 You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Matthew 9:36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 2 Corinthians 4:4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God. Colossians 3:12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. o

Be holy.

o

Be merciful.

o

Be kind.

o

Be humble.

o

Be gentle.

o

Be patient.

Romans 12:21 Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good. So What? Today’s translations: Unless otherwise noted: New Living Translation John Bray, January 11 & 12, 2014 To listen to this sermon again go to www.heritageqc.com and click on Media and then click Weekend Services.

Now What? Resources for Reflection & Growth If God treated you like you think about Miley Cyrus, what would be the state of your life? In no more than two sentences, what was the key thought in this sermon for you? The sermon said, “We live in an increasingly sexualized society.”  What do you think John meant?  Turn on the TV or walk down a high school hallway and you experience a culture which emphasizes a woman’s body. o What do you think causes that? o How do you think a Christian should respond? o Read Romans 13:13-14. What do you think it means to “clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus”? John talked about how we treat people as “objects.” Take a few minutes to think about that.  He said, “When you objectify someone you lose the complexity of who a person is…the multiple layers of personality and intellect, and life history and their value to God.”  What point do you think he was trying to make? Look at the diagram you copied on the first page. John said we the extremes of reaction are to exploit the sinner or condemn them. Then he said, “Unless we weep at the exploitation and unless we weep over the brokenness we miss the heart of God.”  What do you think that means?  Why does condemning or lusting each miss the heart of God?  Faking tears is not the answer. What would have to happen in your life for it to be broken hearted over the sin in others? On page two of the note guide John raced through an explanation of Colossians 3:12. Read that again. Use several translations if you can. Then take some time to consider some additional scripture.  Holy- 2 Corinthians 7:1; 1 Peter 2:11-12; 2 Peter 3:14  Mercy- Micah 6:8; Matthew 5:7; Matthew 5:44  Kind- Ephesians 4:2  Humble- James 4:6-8  Gentle- James 3:17  Patient- 2 Peter 3:9 Beth Cossin is hosting a discussion on the church web site to help facilitate application of this sermon.
