ICSFS 18 will focus on recent advances in controlling and characterizing the physical and chemical properties of thin films and surfaces, with a particular emphasis on materials for electronic, photonic and spintronic applications, in addition to bio-functionalized structures and devices. Main topics: • Organic and hybrid organic/inorganic thin films • Polymer films • Metallic films • Semiconductors and hybrid films • Insulator and oxide surfaces and thin films • Superconducting films, interfaces and surfaces • Topological insulators • Self-assembled films • 2D materials • Carbon based nanostructures and graphene • Quantum dots • Nanostructured films and surfaces • Thin film growth • Bio-functionalization and sensing • Catalysis and surface reactions • Fuel cells and hydrogen storage • Magnetism and spintronics • Photonics, plasmonics, and magnetoplasmonics • Surface metrology • Mechanical characterization and tribology • Novel and emerging methods in thin film characterization • Surface theory and modeling

CHEMNITZ - THE CITY OF MODERNITY Chemnitz, more than 800 years old, is situated in the heart of Saxony. The city is the third-largest in the new Federal States; about 245,000 people live here. More than 10,000 young people study at the Technische Universität Chemnitz.
Chemnitz is located in Saxony on southeast of Germany. The conference location can be reached by different means of transportations. Train: Deutsche Bahn Þ www.bahn.de.en Airports: Dresden International (~ 80 km), Leipzig-Halle (~ 90 km), Berlin (~ 270 km), Frankfurt/Main (~ 400 km), Munich (~ 420 km)
Fascinating architecture reflects the changing times and spirit of those things which have shaped the city: industrial monuments, redeveloped Gründerzeit residential quarters such as Kassberg, the Schocken department store, Villa Esche or the city centre, which has been completely modified since Reunification, constructed by Helmut Jahn, Hans Kollhoff, and Christoph Ingenhoven, bridge the gap from yesterday to today and tomorrow. The city alone has invested more than 50 million Euro in the new city centre, investors more than 500 million Euro. Just as famous is the 7.10-metres-high Karl-Marx bust made of bronze by Lew Kerbel in 1971, locally known as "Nischel" (head). Probably no other city in Germany fits the description "City of Modernity" quite so well as Chemnitz does. Developed at the time of Classical Modernism, which still gives impetus to the development of business and science, the influences of the cultural and architectural Modernism are visible and perceptible.
