Costine Professor Valencic English 101 9th November 2011 Her Life Begins The day my daughter, Kendra was born, was the most memorable experience that has had affect on me, in a truly positive way. Nothing can top the feelings happiness, joy and fear; I have had and still have over the true miracle of witnessing her birth. This story of this true miracle began last year, when we found out Kendra would be arriving in September, 2010. After the initial shock and awe, of the news of her arrival set in, there were a thousand questions to be answered and arrangements had to be made. What would have to be done first, and what would be the plan along the way, to insure she would come into the world healthy and happy? Many questions were posed, all without answers to the soon-to-be middle-aged father. Most father’s on average, are half my age, so this point concerns me every day, but surprisingly the answers seem to come, as either through divine will or osmosis fighting exhaustion. The stage set for Kendra’s birth occurred at the Naval Hospital, Camp Pendleton, California which offered the best care available near our home, and the added advantage of being at-no-cost as we fall under TriCare Prime medical coverage. The knowledge of the fact that an average childbirth and delivery is roughly $20,000 without major complications, and that my bill for her birth was $22.00, can attest to the value of having these earned benefits. So that knowledge alleviated one of the big concerns as to the

Costine 3 initial cost of the childbirth. After care and follow on appointments were and continue to be at-no-cost. Kendra’s actual arrival came, at somewhat of a surprise to us, as we went into the OBGYN third trimester last checkup on Friday, September 10th, 2010, with the assumption that it would be ordinary and routine. After a matter of ten minutes the doctor told us that Kendra was ready and he wanted to deliver that night or no later than the next ominous day of September 11th, 2010. Things were set in order, and my wife, Rosemary, was admitted for observation and prepared for possible induction the next day. Nothing occurred on that Friday and the next day arrived and still the cervical dilation was not great enough to have a natural childbirth or for a safe induction to occur in a proper manner. The doctor finally came in on late Saturday night and told us to prepare for a possible C-section within the next two hours, it was then about 8 PM. Apprehension and fear of this procedure and the effects made us wonder what would happen next. Luckily there were five other births occurring within the ward at this time, and we were given one last reprieve to see if, normal dilation would begin, or other procedures would be needed. Sometime after 12 am, on Sunday, Sept 12th, 2010, Kendra decided it was time to arrive into this world, and with little fanfare and two quick pushes, our miracle arrived at 5:10 AM, Sept 12th, 2010, weighing in at 5 lbs, 10 oz, and has been on the move ever since, ready, willing and able to be the sunshine in our lives and those around her. Kendra will always be and is our miracle.
