My responsibility as a senior-level researcher is varied from project formulation, project execution to peer review. I have been leading several international collaborations and I am expected to build research networks in my area of expertise. I have accomplished projects in capacities ranging from Project Coordinator to Principal Investigator as well as being a team member, in India and Finland. These involve; 1) 2) 3)

Major Projects

Aerosols influence through modelling and measurement techniques on climate and climate change in India – from local to regional scale, Field measurements through monitoring and survey activities, emission inventories, Application of air quality models to assess the pollution potential of sources qualitatively and quantitatively to suggest remedial measures for bringing the pollution level below the threshold limit value.

“Influence of clouds and atmospheric aerosols on solar energy in India and Finland” 2015-2017 ongoing. The goal of the project is to quantify the solar potential influenced by rapidly progressing climate change. This will be assessed through observations and using aerosol-climate modelling with various emission scenarios, which will provide unique information for planning optimised emission control strategies and legislation in order to achieve maximum usage of solar energy in India and Finland. “Climate modelling and observations” 2014-2017 ongoing. Overall objective of the project is to reduce climate and weather related loss of life and property in India and support climate policy and decision making through improved climate research and climate services. “Absorbing aerosols and fate of the Indian glaciers” 2013-2017 ongoing. The research relies on expeditions made on a selected Himalayan glacier, available in situ and satellite measurement data, and modelling tools. A background aerosol measurement station in the foothills of the Himalayas, Mukteshwar will be a full-time receptor site for absorbing aerosols rising from the Indo-Gangetic Plains.

2 “Black and brown carbon influence on climate in India – from local to regional scale”, funded by Academy of Finland, Finnish Meteorological Institute–2013-2014. The overall goal aimed to advance our knowledge on brown and black carbon influence on climate. Improved chemical speciation of the absorbing aerosol species (BrC in particular) based on combined use of remote sensing, aerosol-climate modelling, and in-situ measurements in Indo-Gangetic plain and Himalayan foothills. First time in India was used SP2 and CCN counter for determining aerosol properties. “Particulate air pollution over India and the ‘brown cloud’ associated with it”, funded by Finnish Meteorological Institute–2005-2012. The project aimed to characterize the basic properties (total particle mass and number concentration, particle size distribution, absorption and scattering coefficient) of regional background aerosols over the Indian continent, including their seasonal cycle and long-term trend. Mukteshwar is the first station in India has had longest time-series of aerosols observation at a high altitude (2180m asl). The station is operational and measurements are ongoing. “Air pollution exposure assessment by land-use regression (LUR) – A pilot study aiming for health effects of air pollution in India’’, funded by Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH)–2010-2012. This project aimed to formulate model for health assessment studies at cohort population in India. I had accomplished traffic survey coordination, coordinated GIS team work and team working for household questionnaire, and worked on regression-model development in co-operation with NIPH. “Master Plan study for collection, recycling and safe disposal of end-of-life Hg bearing Lamps (CFLs/FTLs) & associated Electronics”, funded by ELCOMA (Electric Lamp and Component Manufacturers Association of India)–2010-2011. This study prepared a Master plan for safe disposal of Hg containing spent fluorescent lamps and associated electronics at National level. I had executed inventorization, evaluation, formulation of possible financial models, conducting primary surveys analysis and public opinion/feedback on Master Plan. “Reduction of Energy Consumption/ CO2 emission and improvement of air quality in Asia”, funded by Toyota Motor Corporation–2008-2010. The project was based on development of energy scenarios for India and the related emissions for air pollutants, and air quality simulation (for ozone and particulate matter) using CMAQ model. In addition, primary air quality monitoring for ozone was also carried out at few locations. I had done NMVOCs emission inventorization and its speciation matrix for the first time in India at State and National level, and which is most critical for ozone simulations. “European Integrated project on Aerosol Cloud Climate and Air Quality interactions (EUCAARI)”, funded by European Commission–2007-2010. The tasks executed were measurement of physical, chemical and optical properties of aerosols in India (including annual and seasonal variations). The parameters measured were: Physical (number size distribution), Chemical (size resolved chemical composition), and Optical (light scattering, light absorption, vertical profile of extinction coefficient, aerosol optical depth) at Gual Pahari station. “Air Quality monitoring and emission source apportionment study: Bangalore”, funded by oil industry–2005-2009. This project was aimed for air quality monitoring, emission inventory and source apportionment of particulate matter. I had worked on chemical characterization, inventorization and both dispersion and receptor modelling tools in development of the management plan. “Multi-grid three dimensional air quality model”, funded by Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan and in technical collaboration with Toyota central R&D labs Japan–2005-2008. This project applied a regional air quality model (CMAQ in combination with MM5) under learning of R&D Labs for the assessment of air quality at an urban area. I had done emission inventorization for Bangalore city and urban agglomerated zones from KSPCB data base. "Mobility for development–A case study of Bangalore”, funded by World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan, and Renault–20052007. The study aimed to raise awareness of the importance of mobility as a driver for economic development in Bangalore, to examine opportunities to narrow the mobility divide in Bangalore (between rich-poor and urban-rural) and to discuss sustainable mobility solutions (including virtual mobility solutions) for the rapidly growing city of Bangalore. I had contributed in conduction and analysis of primary surveys and data.
